Add Healing Flavors To Food With Horseradish

816830 f260 Add Healing Flavors To Food With HorseradishThe unique flavor of horseradish, that is high in vitamin C and contains no fat, will spice up your meals. The 3,000-year-old horseradish plant is known as a dynamite companion to meats, such as beef, chicken, seafood and more.

If you’re trying to lose weight, make sure horseradish, mustard and salsa are on your shopping list, advises recent guidelines on obesity from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).  And,

Horseradish has a million possibilities, lots of flavor and no fat. In one tablespoon of prepared horseradish, there is only 6 calories, 1.4 grams of carbohydrates, 14 milligrams of sodium, 44 milligrams of potassium, 9 milligrams of calcium, 5 milligrams of phosphorous AND ZERO FAT.

A new study from the University of Illinois shows that horseradish has substantial quantities of glucosinolates, compounds that has been shown to increase human resistance to cancer.

An effective dose of broccoli may be as little as 10 grams a day, so an effective dose of horseradish could be as little as 1 gram or less than a teaspoon.

The common name, horseradish, means a coarse radish rather than the edible garden radish.

Growing your own horseradish is a simple business. Best of all, once you grow a bit you’ll have it, for free, forever.

The horseradish plant loves the sunshine, but it will still grow all right if it has some shade during the day. As for soil, this plant is not fussy about that. The only kind that will give the horseradish any problem is soil that remains soggy wet for long periods.

How to Plant

Simply cut off the top third of the root. Save the top portion to use in your cooking and plant the bottom portion in the ground. Dig a hole twelve inches deep and add some compost to the hole.

To place the root into the hole, slant it at a 45-degree angle. The top should be two inches below the top of the ground. Plant the roots thirty inches apart.

Growing

The horseradish is a simple plant to grow. After you plant your root, give it a drink of water. That is all there is to it. After it starts to grow, simply water once a week if it doesn’t rain.

Otherwise, Mother Nature will take care of it and help it grow. You can mulch around the top if you want to help keep in the moisture.

Through the summer you can eat fresh young horseradish leaves in your salads.

After your plant has been growing for one year, dig up your horseradish.

People eat horseradish for all different reasons. Most enjoy the flavor; some feel it has health benefits; some eat it to clear their heads; and some have their own reasons for eating it!

No matter what your reason for eating horseradish, you can be sure it will add some zing to your food, and no fat. What more could you ask for?

Thank you very much for the information and for creating a nice website. I have been hunting for honest info on gardening and can put this information to use. I have found it hard to find honest recommendations, as there are so many web sites with useless posts. Certainly keep the good stuff flowing!
