Asparagus is a good companion to tomatoes, basil, parsley. Last year I decided to try something different. I used asparagus as a backdrop for one of my flower borders.
Asparagus plants thrive with the same regular feeding and watering that flowers love. So, these ornamental edibles make positive garden partners.
And, in the spring, it’s easy to reach the spears for harvesting. In summer and fall, the ferny foliage makes a gorgeous backdrop for bright blooms.
Parsley, planted with asparagus gives added vigor to both. Asparagus also does well with basil, which is a good companion for tomatoes.
Tomatoes will protect asparagus against asparagus-beetles because they contain substance called solanine.
A chemical derived from asparagus juice has also been found effective on tomato plants as a killer of nematodes, including root-knot, sting, stubby root, and meadow nematodes.
In my garden I grow asparagus in a row at one side. After the spears are harvested in early spring, I plant tomatoes on either side. Both plants prosper from this association.
Growing the tomatoes also keeps down the weeds from the asparagus. Here are some secrets for growing fast asparagus. It is possible to enjoy garden-fresh asparagus the same year you plant, if you know my two part time-saving tricks (Growing Asparagus: Tips and Tricks).

I swear by companion planting and use this method of gardening instead of spraying chemicals all over the place. I also love asparagus, so learning about using it as a companion plant is a real treat. I will definitely be planting it this year. Thanks so much for the info. Now I must go read your tips for growing asparagus.
Hi Polly, I am living one summer only in a home that has asparagus already in the yard. I want to plant flowers that will do well with and for the asparagus. I know about tomatoes and basil, thanks to you – what annual flowers will work well? The area is mostly sunny. Thanks. Rebecca
