Garlic Bread: Right On Taste, Light On Calories!

by Polly

Garlic bread: right on taste, light on calories and is so delicious. People think that because garlic bread consists of much more than just baked flour, it would be very challenging to create. Quite on the contrary, it is incredibly easy to make with bread machine.

Some people love to knead bread. Maybe it relaxes them from garden chores or helps them work out frustrations. The bread machine is the perfect appliance for everyone else — those who love the smell and taste of freshly baked bread and rolls, but don’t have the need to knead.

Nothing beats the taste of the fresh ingredients that go into my homemade version of garlic bread. Here is the recipe for garlic bread 1 1/2 pound loaf (bread machine). This bread  usually turns out gorgeous, golden, crusty and so fluffy. The crust is chewy but the inside is light and airy.

Ingredients:

1 cup water — plus

1 tablespoon water  or skim milk

1 tablespoon  of olive oil or butter — softened

3-4 garlic cloves –  fresh, finely chopped

3 cups bread flour

2 tablespoon dry milk

2 tablespoon sugar  or honey

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil leaves

½ teaspoon dried rosemary leaves

¼ teaspoon dried thyme leaves

2 1/4 teaspoons bread machine yeast

Place the ingredients in the bread pan in the order recommended by your machine’s manufacturer.  Choose the appropriate cycle. When finished, remove carefully and let cool out of the bread machine for a few minutes. Slice, and enjoy immediately for a delicious time.

Fresh garlic is actually very good for you. It is a natural antibiotic, and has been shown to relax blood vessels, increase blood flow and decrease risk for various cancers.

I do love my fresh garlic and use it in lots of dishes to the point my husband has called me a garlicholic. Eating garlic bread and other garlic products can also be helpful for losing weight.

Average slice of garlic bread contains 8 g of carbs, 0.5g of dietary fiber for better health and digestion. There are 53 calories in 1 small slice of my garlic bread. It is quite law in sugar and cholesterol. I put garlic in just about everything I cook and love it.

*   Raw Garlic Toast

Mix one clove of  finely minced garlic with one to two tablespoon pastured butter and spread on a piece of toasted  sprouted or sourdough bread. This is also good when dipped into a hot bowl of soup.

*   Guacamole

Mix 1-3 cloves of minced garlic with 1 small mashed avocado. Add salt and chopped cilantro. Serve with chips or dollop on your choice of Mexican food.

*   Garlic Basil Mayonnaise

This pretty green mayonnaise is packed with the flavor of garlic and basil. If the raw egg concerns you, use irradiated eggs which are available in most markets. Use as a condiment with fish, grilled chicken, vegetables, sandwiches, and salads.

Ingredients:

1/3 cup olive oil

1 egg

4 to 7 cloves  of garlic mashed to taste

1/2 cup spicy globe or lemon basil, tightly packed

1/4 tsp dry mustard or 1 tsp Dijon-style mustard

1 tbsp lemon juice or cider vinegar

Dash of sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

2/3 cup olive oil

Preparation:

Place vegetable oil, egg, garlic, basil, mustard, lemon juice or vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the metal blade. Puree for 1 minute, stopping to scrape down sides.

With the motor running, drizzle olive oil down the chute in a slow but steady stream. Stop as soon as the olive oil has been incorporated and mixture is thick and emulsified. Do not over-process or it will separate. Add 1 teaspoon of very hot water, pulsing several times to blend in. (This will help stabilize the mayonnaise.)

Yield: about 1 cup

If we analyze the cuisine of various nations around the word,bread is found in different shapes and sizes everywhere. I hope that garlic bread: right on taste, light on calories will find its place at your table.
