Organic Blueberries – 3 Growing Tips

By Polly

937870546_ddb05a4f40_mjpgGrowing blueberries is very easy. You couldn’t ask for an easier-to-grow plant than a blueberry bush. It’s a winner for the first time gardener or the old, dirt gardener.

Organic TIP # 1

Give the blueberry plant a pot or a raised bed filled with this root- pleasing organic mix, and get ready for a fine, fruitful feast.

INGREDIENTS:

2 parts garden soil
2 parts chopped, composted leaves
2 parts coarse builder’s sand*
1 part compost
Don’t use beach or sandbox sand: it’s too fine and can be alkaline, which blueberries hate

INSTRUCTIONS: Mix these ingredients in a wheelbarrow. Use the mixture to fill your containers or raised beds. Then plant when you’re ready! And,

ORGANIC TIP  #2

Java Jive! Don’t you dare throw out those old coffee grounds. Give ‘em to your blueberries instead. They’ll be as pleased as punch. Coffee grounds help keep soil on the acid side – and that’s exactly what keeps blueberries in the pink!

Not a coffee drinker? Then tuck your used tea bags into the soil. They will serve the same purpose. You can use cool tea to water blueberries.

ORGANIC TIP #3

The Birds and the Blueberries

Birds love blueberries. You can share your berries with them. As a fellow bird lover, this may not sound too bad. But, you will need several bushes to keep your family and the birds satisfied.

We recommend you make those birds feel blue. Take the fruit of your labor away from them. Use bird netting. It is relatively inexpensive and will last for a few years.

I love your approach! Definitely an awesome post. Also, blueberries are just plain awesome! :)

  2. Jean says:

How can I remove oak and maple trees that are growing in my blueberry bushes? They are two big to pull just pull out.

  3. Polly says:

I can help you. But, first you need to tell me how big the trees are. I do not mean how high. I mean how wide – straight through. Not around the edges.

However, you need to decide which is more important to you: the bush or the trees?

Or, you could replant the blueberries. In the fall that is. It’s easy. But not now. They are in bloom.

Send me pics of the trees as an attachment to iconexpa@pactree.com. Or, tell me how wide the each tree is and I can help you.

We have planted a few blueberries and used a lot of peat moss when planting. I have used coffee grounds around them. They still just dry up and die. I don’t want to give up, but it really is frustrating. Thanks for any help.

  5. Polly says:

You did everything right when planted. They need a lot of water while growing. And, they don’t like to be planted deep.

Is is Nov 25. It is too late to transplant blueberries here in south west Ohio? Today we are digging trench and adding the sand, soil, leaves and compost.

    Thanks, Karon
