Michelle Obama’s Organic Kitchen Garden And Six Reasons For Raised Beds

by Polly

You may wonder whether it’s worth your while to build raised beds.

I know you’ll love them as well as Michelle Obama.

Here’s 6 reasons to love raised beds: Michelle Obamas Organic Kitchen Garden And Six Reasons For Raised Beds

1. Terrific time and money savers. Forget about digging up the ground every year!

Build the beds once. The soil in them will stay loose and fluffy year after year. You don’t need a trowel to plant in your raised beds. You can scoop aside the crumbly soil with your fingers.

You don’t need to weed as much when crops grow close together because weeds are crowded out. And,

2. Say “so long” to mud. Since the beds are permanent, the paths around them are too. And that makes it easy to cover them with straw, wood chips, or some other material to keep your feet out of the mud.

3. Veggies love ‘em. Besides allowing excellent drainage, raised beds give your crops extra room for good root growth. And, the bigger the root system, the healthier the plant – and the more abundant the harvest.

4. Crops produce better because they grow in deep, loose, fertile soil that is never walked upon. Walking compacts the soil and drives out oxygen. You get twice as much crop in the same space.

5. Raised beds get warmer more quickly in the spring. This is a terrific head start over regular planting in the ground. Because raised beds warm up faster and to a higher temperature by mid summer.

6. There’s one more reason; but, it does not apply to the Michelle. It’s for handicap people. Raised beds allows them to not stoop over so far to work the crops and ground. And the convenience of more crops per square feet, means they don’t have to walk so far.
