Natural Skin Care From The Garden: Cucumbers

By Polly

1198818295_e3f4b7a399_mHave you ever tried natural skin care with cucumbers right out of your organic garden? Cucumber has been used for centuries as a natural, organic skin toner. It has a cool, refreshing feel on the face, and cleanses your pores without harsh chemicals. Even more wonderful are the natural hormones it contains that have been proven to dissolve away wrinkles.

The flesh of cucumbers is primarily composed of water but also contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and caffeic acid, both of which help soothe skin irritations and reduce swelling. Cucumbers’ hard skin is rich in fiber and contains a variety of beneficial minerals including silica, potassium and magnesium. And,

Cucumbers are used topically for various types of skin problems, including swelling under the eyes and sunburn. Two compounds in cucumbers, ascorbic acid and caffeic acid, prevent water retention, which may explain why cucumbers applied topically are often helpful for swollen eyes, burns and dermatitis.

Grated cucumber, applied over the face and neck for 15 to 20 minutes, works as an excellent tonic. Regular usage prevents pimples, blackheads and dryness of face.

It is believed that cucumber helps in reducing swelling around the eyes or the big dark circles under your eyes. This is world-wide treatment which is being used to its maximum extent.

Cucumbers are the most wonderful and natural eye pads you can find for yourself. The puffiness and the tiredness in your eyes may just leave you, if you do this in a relaxed fashion. These natural eye pads do wonders after a long days work.13283589_53277ad56f_m

Cucumber is a surprising beauty secret for the skin, with its
hydrating, nourishing and astringent properties. Cucumbers have
the same pH as the skin so they help to restore the skin’s protective and natural acid mantle. You could cut them and put cucumber coins straight onto your skin to sooth and soften, or combine them as here with other kitchen-cupboard ingredients to provide lovely toning.

Here’s how to make this healing, refreshing treat for your skin:

INGREDIENTS
5 fresh mint leaves
1/4 medium cucumber
1 large egg white
Bottled or spring water

1. Place the mint in a food processor or blender and give it one short burst to chop. Peel and seed the cucumber. Add it to the mint in the processor or blender and puree. Beat the egg white separately until it stands in stiff peaks. Fold it very gently in to the pureed cucumber mixture.

2. Apply evenly to the face and neck and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse with bottled or spring water and pat dry.

  1. Egg white is a pretty good mask all by itself. I usually use cucumbers and yogurt for a refreshing, moisturizing mask.
