If your winter views are discouraging, now is the time to add winter beauty. Hollies are simply too useful to ignore.

The most common hollies are evergreen – hardcore, stubbornly retentive trees and shrubs providing unfailing winter cheer. Some of them are deciduous, dropping their leaves in autumn to reveal fruit-laden stems like berry shish kebabs.

There is an abundance of forms of holly trees with leaves bordered, blotched and banded in silver and gold. Decked out in multicolored leaves, these selections brighten garden corners. [click to continue…]

4754869039 878162da99 m 100x150 Its All About Planting Trees In The Fall

Tree planting in the fall ensures the best results

It’s all about planting trees in the fall and giving them the best start you can. Your trees will love the mild temperatures of fall while becoming established.  In the fall, the warm soil encourages root growth until the ground freezes. So right now, as the air gets crisp and the evenings draw in early, the garden is all about the trees.

The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now.”

So grab your garden tools and a handsome young tree, and let’s get this party started!

*1.    Digging the Right Sized Hole: Measure Twice, Dig Once

Since your hole should be dug to exactly the same depth as the height of your root ball, make your life easy and actually measure the root ball.

*2.    The Perks of Good Drainage

Good drainage is critical, so please do not skip this step. Simply fill the hole with water and wait until the next day. If the water level does not drain away overnight, you have a drainage problem.

In this case, you might want to either choose another site, or add some additional drainage. [click to continue…]

sage 1 114x150 Sage Is A Healing Herb For All Seasons!Sage is a healing herb for all seasons. Why?  Because cold weather doesn’t have to signal the end of your sage harvest!

To extend the season and keep the sage coming, pot up a clump or two of your favorite sage, then leave the pots outdoors for several weeks.

Once the plants have gotten a good chilling, bring the pots indoors to a bright windowsill. Before you know it, new shoots will appear, and you can enjoy fresh-picked sage all winter long.

We like to tuck sage plants everywhere in our garden- with other herbs, veggies, flowers, and even shrub plantings! So you can imagine that in summer we have a whole lot of sage on hand for harvesting. One of our favorite ways to make the most of this abundance is by making herbal wreaths. [click to continue…]

It’s been said that the way to a lover’s heart is through his (or her) stomach. And, it’s true that great nutrition can promote great sex. Some foods and beverages – or, more specifically, the vitamins, minerals and other compounds they contain – may indeed help improve your sex life.

In reality, what benefits your heart also tends to benefit your libido, because our genitals need optimal blood flow to function properly.

As one of my favorite Doctors states, Dr. Nalini Chilkov L.Ac., O.M.D., “Love foods that stimulate desire are prized in cultures worldwide. These foods have circulatory, relaxant and muscle strengthening effects, or visual, tactile or sensory impact that stimulates the psyche. The brain, after all is the largest sexual organ in the body.”
