Tall Plants: Large & Happy Blooms That Rise Above The Rest

tallest sunflower Tall Plants: Large & Happy Blooms That Rise Above The RestTall plants with their large blooms bring an unexpected explosion of color to your garden. I’m talking about the easy- going giants that announce themselves by standing out above the rest.

Even the most delicately designed of perennial flower gardens will benefit from several tall plants to prevent the overall look from becoming boring. There’s a place in every garden for tall flowers, especially those that make excellent cut flowers.

Here are a few:

*   Butterfly bush: A butterfly bush can grow to 5 or 6 feet — 7 in a good season. They attract butterflies and other insects as well as hummingbirds, drawn to their pink, white, purple or blue flowers. Full sun.

*   Cosmos: This delicate-looking flower with its fernlike leaves is tough as nails and easy to grow from seed. Their airy, beautiful forms work well just about anywhere, whether it is a container, small annual bed or a large mixed border.

Cosmos need full sun, but will thrive in ordinary soil. In fact, cosmos basically thrive on neglect once they’re growing strong. Butterflies and bees love them. Sensation is just one of the taller varieties, topping out at 4 feet.

And no matter what your color preference is, there is a cosmos out there for you. In addition, adding cosmos will almost guarantee that your garden will be visited by butterflies.

*   Delphinium: A summer garden staple, they grow to 6 feet and have beautiful blooms that attract butterflies. Probably the most majestic, eye-catching of the big perennials. Their dazzling star-shaped blossoms, often with dark eyes, range in color from white through darkest blue and are arranged on lovely spires with whimsical drooping tips.

Carefully placed clumps of these tall plants- which can tower nearly eight feet – add spectacular beauty and an established look to your garden. Delphiniums bloom in early summer in a wide range of colors, including true blue. They prefer areas where summers are not hot and humid and like really rich soil to produce those good-size blooms. Full sun to partial shade.

*  Sunflower: If you want them really tall, buy one of the older varieties.   What’s more impressive than a 10- or 15-foot-tall plant with a basketball-size flower on top? Some of the taller varieties: American Giant Hybrid, Mammoth and Skyscraper. Full sun.

Are you ready to grow some sunflowers in your garden? These large and happy blooms can bring a smile to just about any face and when you are thinking about adding some color as well as some height to your  flower garden, this might be the way to do it!

*   Canna: Big leaves and boldly colored flowers (red, orange, yellow or pink) add drama to a garden..The tallest one is  ‘Musafolia,’ and that can get to 12 feet in a season if it’s happy, in a warm, moist spot.. Full sun.

Cannas offer showy, tropical color all summer long. Flower colors include brilliant yellows, oranges, pinks, and reds. The large foliage is as flashy as the flowers. Leaves may be green, bronze, or burgundy and are often striped or marbled. In most of the country, cannas will not survive the winter outdoors; you must dig up the rhizomes in the fall.
